Guatemala has always been battered by severe earthquakes. With the arrival of Spanish Builders and Clergymen, improvised architecture became the ’first order of activity’. Later, European Architects and Builders arrived, but had not been previously exposed to seismic buildings. Local Architects and Builders had to develop systems to assist and improve building design and construction and prevent total collapse.
